2008 Summer Methodology Workshop

15th Annual Demography Graduate Student Methodology Workshop
- Age-Period-Cohort Models -

Age, Period, and Cohort models provide demographers a window into the intersection of historical and biographical time. For quantitative researchers, APC models are central for the analysis of individual and social change. However, modeling age, period, and cohort effects has provided a lasting challenge for demographers. Traditional analyses have yielded unidentified models, and have been unable to disentangle the unique effects of each component. This workshop revisits this classic topic, and examines the theoretical and methodological issues surrounding age, period, and cohort models, including a presentation of cutting-edge new research by Professors Christopher Winship, Ph.D (Harvard), Kenneth Land, Ph.D (Duke), and Glenn Firebaugh, Ph.D. (Penn State).
