Consulting for Dual-Degree Students

Student access to PRI staff consulting

  1. The funding for PRI Computer, GIA, and Information core staff from the NICHD Center grant is to support funded or pending population science research grants by Penn State faculty research associates. The PRI NICHD Center grant unfortunately provided no direct funds for graduate student consulting, except as related to faculty mentor's funded research projects.
  2. That said, the PRI staff want to be helpful to Demography Program students. However, PRI computer and GIA core staff time is usually fully budgeted on faculty research projects, thus time-limited unfunded consultation is by appointment only.  It is not appropriate to just pop into PRI computer and GIA staff offices and expect help without making an appointment.
  3. If you need significant programmer or GIA consultation, you and your faculty adviser need to purchase a dedicated block of a programmer's consulting time.
  4. Students working on faculty advisor's PRI-administered research grants have greater access to PRI support staff when the project has purchased programmer or GIA staff time.
