MacFuse and MacFusion

Mount remote filesystems on your Mac

If you will want to access your PopNet Unix home directories on your Mac when you are not at Oswald Tower, you will need to install MacFuse and MacFusion.

Mac Fuse can be downloaded here:

http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/

[Mac 10.7 Lion see http://roaringapps.com/app:872 ]

When installed the MacFuse product will appear in your System Preferences panel under "Other"

You will want to click on the MacFuse icon in System Preferences and make sure that you have the latest version, the Beta version works fine.

Once MacFuse is installed you can download MacFusion.

MacFusion can be downloaded here:

also available here: http://github.com/downloads/nall/MacFusion2/Macfusion-2.0.4-SL.zip

If the install went well you will find MacFusion in your Applications directory....

OR you may find the MacFusion on your desktop - you should drag it into the Applications directory.

Open up MacFusion, by double clicking,  you will see.

In the MacFusion window on the bottom toolbar, you will see +    and a 'gear wheel'.

To add a new Mount Connection click on the  and choose SSHFS

A window will open up which you can fill in the information about the location of the files.  For example, to access the PRI SodaPop Data Archive, the information required would be:

Provide a name at the top for the connection: e.g. SodaPop

HOST: unix.pop.psu.edu  the PRI Unix server

User Name & Password:  This is your PRI UNIX account ID/PW

Path: /nfs/sodapop/sas_data/  -- the path/directory for all the SAS datasets in the data archive

Your MacFusion SSH panel would look like this:

The settings on SSH Advanced Tab should look like this:

In the MacFusion Tab you can determine where you will access your files.  Most people like to have an icon on their Desktop.  In some versions of MacFusion, that seems to be the default, but you can explicitly set this and select a unique icon for your data in the MacFusion tab.

The Mount Point can be left blank, but you can specify a location.

I could have the files appear as an icon on my Desktop by using the Mount Point:

/Users/yourmacusername/Desktop/yourconnectionname
e.g. /Users/jeannespicer/Desktop/SodaPop
*Note Lion users: In order for the icon to appear on your Desktop, you may need to go to Finder-->Preferences-->General and check that "Connected servers" will Show on the desktop.

Alternatively, I could make the files in the SodaPop connection appear to be a subfolder of my Mac home folder by specifying the Mount Point:

/Users/yourmacusername/yourconnectionname
e. g. /Users/jeannespicer/SodaPop

You can optionally select an icon for your connection (I chose a little pop can). Click OK to complete the settings and you should see...

Click Mount to access the filesystem.  Depending on how you set the mount point, the file listing will appear in your Finder window under Devices, in your Finder window in a specific directory or as an icon on your desktop.   The first time you mount a filesystem you will be asked allow the connection, click "Always Allow".

Note: If you cannot find the files after mounting, right-mouse over the name of the connection in the MacFusion window and click Reveal, you can drag the connection folder to either your Finder or Desktop from there and MacFusion will remember.

Be sure to Unmount or Eject your MacFusion connection before you logout.
