How to Fix Adobe Reader X from Starting in Protected Mode

This document will help you disable Adobe Reader X's Protected Mode so PDF's can be opened in a browser. Applicable to Windows XP and Windows 7.

The latest release of Adobe Reader, called Adobe Reader X, has caused problems for many PRI users whose primary operating system is Microsoft Windows.  This problem is due to a new feature in Reader X called "Protected Mode".  When Protected Mode is enabled, the reader won't open certain PDF files and the user will be unable to open PDF documents in a browser.  This document will help users fix this problem.

  • Click on the Start menu and select "All Programs"
  • Click on Adobe Reader X

  • If you are presented with the windows below, please select "Always open with Protected Mode disabled", click OK, and exit the reader.  There is nothing more you need to do.

  • Otherwise, click on the "Edit" menu and go to "Preferences"

  • Under the "General" tab, make sure that "Enable Protected Mode at Startup" is not checked and click "OK"

  • Reboot your machine
